Christmas Season

Epiphany of the Lord

Follow the star, worship Christ the King, and carry His light into your home and life.

Epiphany celebrates the manifestation of Jesus Christ to the nations, represented by the Magi who journeyed from the East to worship the newborn King. It is a feast of light, seeking, adoration, gift-giving, and renewed dedication to Christ.

What Is Epiphany?

Epiphany means manifestation or revelation. In the Christian tradition, this feast celebrates Christ being revealed not only to Israel, but to all nations. The Magi represent the Gentiles coming to adore Jesus, showing that the light of Christ is meant for the whole world.

  • Epiphany is closely connected to the Christmas season.
  • The Magi follow the star to Bethlehem.
  • They worship Jesus and offer gifts.
  • The feast reveals Christ as King, God, and Savior.
  • Many Catholic families bless their homes during Epiphany.
  • The feast invites us to seek Christ and return by a new road.

Scripture for Epiphany

Matthew 2:1–12

The Magi see the star, journey to Jerusalem, are directed to Bethlehem, find the Child with Mary His Mother, fall down in worship, offer gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and return home by another way.

Follow the Star

Step 1

Notice the Light

The Magi noticed a sign and responded. Ask where God is gently drawing your attention.

Step 2

Leave Comfort Behind

Seeking Christ requires movement, sacrifice, and trust.

Step 3

Persevere Through Confusion

The Magi had to ask, search, and continue even when the path was not fully clear.

Step 4

Worship the King

The journey ends in adoration, not information alone.

Step 5

Offer Your Gifts

Gold, frankincense, and myrrh invite us to offer Christ our whole life.

Step 6

Return by a New Road

After encountering Christ, the Magi return differently. Epiphany calls us to conversion.

Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh

Gold

Christ is King.

What part of my life needs to come under the reign of Christ?

Jesus, my King, reign over my heart, my home, and my choices.

Frankincense

Christ is God.

How can I worship Jesus more faithfully this year?

Jesus, true God, receive my prayer, adoration, and love.

Myrrh

Christ will suffer and die for our salvation.

What suffering or sacrifice can I unite to Jesus?

Jesus, suffering Savior, help me offer my trials with trust and love.

Epiphany Prayer Guide

  1. Light a candle.
  2. Read Matthew 2:1–12.
  3. Ask Jesus to reveal His light in your home.
  4. Reflect on the gifts of the Magi.
  5. Offer your own gift to Christ.
  6. Pray for your home and family.
  7. End by asking to return by a new road.
Lord Jesus Christ,
Light of the nations and King of all creation,
lead me by Your grace as You led the Magi by the star.

Teach me to seek You with perseverance,
to worship You with humility,
and to offer You the gifts of my life.

Bless my home,
guide my family,
and help me return from this feast by a new road:
the road of conversion, charity, and deeper faith.

Amen.

Bless Your Home at Epiphany

A beloved Epiphany tradition is the blessing of homes, asking Christ to dwell in the household and guide all who enter. Many families mark the doorway with blessed chalk as a reminder that the home belongs to Christ.

Chalk inscription example

20 + C + M + B + 26

The numbers mark the year. The letters can recall the traditional names of the Magi — Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar — and are also commonly associated with the Latin prayer Christus Mansionem Benedicat, meaning “May Christ bless this house.”

If your parish offers blessed chalk or an Epiphany home blessing, follow your local parish or diocesan custom.

Build Your Epiphany Home Blessing Plan

Create a simple family Epiphany blessing plan with a chalk inscription, prayer intentions, room prompts, and a closing prayer. This is for family prayer and does not replace a liturgical blessing from a priest or deacon.

From Christmas Joy to Epiphany Light

Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ. Epiphany reveals that the Child born in Bethlehem is the light of all nations. The feast extends Christmas joy outward: from the manger to the nations, from Bethlehem to every home, from adoration to mission.
