Catholic Devotions

Discover prayers and practices that help Catholics draw closer to Christ, honor Mary and the saints, seek mercy, grow in virtue, and live the liturgical year.

Devotions are meant to support the sacramental and liturgical life of the Church and lead the heart toward deeper love of God.

Introduction

What Are Catholic Devotions?

Devotions are prayerful helps that support the Christian life when they remain ordered to Christ, the sacraments, Scripture, and charity.

Catholic devotions are prayerful practices that help the faithful express love for God, meditate on the mysteries of Christ, honor Mary and the saints, seek conversion, make reparation, and grow in holiness.

Devotions are not required in the same way as Sunday Mass. They are spiritual helps, not substitutes for the sacraments. They may be personal, family-based, parish-based, or seasonal, and they often include prayers, chaplets, litanies, novenas, holy hours, medals, scapulars, pilgrimages, or acts of consecration.

A healthy devotion bears fruit in humility, charity, repentance, faith, hope, and love.

Pastoral guidance

Devotions and the Liturgy

Catholic devotions are beautiful when they flow from and lead back to the liturgical life of the Church. The Mass, the sacraments, and the Liturgy of the Hours remain central. Devotions help extend that worship into daily life, family prayer, works of mercy, and personal conversion.

The Mass is the source and summit of Christian life.

Devotions should not compete with the liturgy.

Devotions can prepare us for Mass and help us live its grace.

Devotions can deepen love for the Eucharist, Mary, the saints, Scripture, and works of mercy.
