Death
Death is the end of earthly life, but in Christ it becomes a passage toward eternal life. The Christian prepares for death through faith, repentance, the sacraments, charity, and hope.
Catholic Formation
A hopeful Catholic guide to the Last Things: death, judgment, Heaven, Hell, Purgatory, resurrection, and the coming of Christ.
Catholic eschatology is not meant to produce fear or speculation. It teaches us to live in the light of eternity, to prepare for death with faith, to trust God's justice and mercy, and to hope for the resurrection and eternal life promised in Jesus Christ.
Eschatology is the study of the “last things” — the final realities of human life and history. In Catholic teaching, this includes death, particular judgment, Heaven, Hell, Purgatory, the resurrection of the body, the Final Judgment, and the return of Christ in glory.
Pastoral note
This section avoids fear-based speculation. The goal is not anxiety about the end times, but faithful hope in Jesus Christ.
Death is the end of earthly life, but in Christ it becomes a passage toward eternal life. The Christian prepares for death through faith, repentance, the sacraments, charity, and hope.
Catholic teaching distinguishes the Particular Judgment after death and the Final Judgment at the end of time. Judgment reveals the truth of each life in the light of God's justice and mercy.
Heaven is perfect communion with God, the angels, and the saints. It is the fulfillment of the deepest human longing: seeing God face to face in the Beatific Vision.
Hell is eternal separation from God, freely chosen by definitive rejection of His mercy. The Church teaches this reality soberly to call souls to repentance, not despair.
A final purification for those who die in God's grace but still need to be made ready for the full vision of God.
At the end of time, God will raise the dead. Salvation is not only for the soul, but for the whole person, body and soul.
Christ will return in glory to judge the living and the dead and bring God's Kingdom to its fullness.
The truth of every life and all history will be revealed in God's justice and mercy.
