The Annunciation

ScriptureLuke 1:26–38

Grace to askto say yes to God with Mary's trust

The Angel Gabriel is sent by God to a humble virgin in Nazareth. He announces that she has been chosen to bear the Son of the Most High. Mary, full of grace, freely gives her fiat: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word.” Through her yes, the Word becomes flesh.

Grace to askTo carry Christ to others with joy.

After the Annunciation, the Blessed Virgin Mary travels in haste to the hill country to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who is also miraculously with child. The Nativity

ScriptureLuke 2:1–20

Grace to askTo welcome Jesus with simplicity, humility, and wonder.

In the fullness of time, Jesus Christ, the Eternal Son of God, is born in Bethlehem. Rejected by the crowded inns of men, He enters the world in poverty and humility within a stable. Mary wraps Him in swaddling clothes and lays Him in a manger. Angels announce His birth to shepherds, proclaiming peace and glory to God in the highest.

The Presentation in the Temple

ScriptureLuke 2:22–38

Grace to askTo offer everything back to God with trust and love.

Forty days after the birth of Jesus, Mary and Joseph bring the Child to the Temple in Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord according to the Law of Moses. There they encounter the holy elder Simeon and the prophetess Anna. Simeon recognizes Jesus as the promised Messiah and prophesies both salvation and sorrow: that a sword will pierce Mary's soul.
