Memorial of Saint Jerome, Priest and Doctor of the Church Wednesday, September 30, 2026

Reflection

Job stands before the mystery of God with humility. He recognizes that God’s wisdom and power are far beyond human understanding. Job cannot explain his suffering, yet he continues to turn toward God in prayer. His words teach us that faith does not require us to understand everything. Sometimes faith simply means remaining before God when no explanation comes.

In the Gospel, several people express a desire to follow Jesus, but each attaches a condition: I will follow you, but first… Jesus answers with urgency. Following Him cannot remain a good intention postponed until life becomes easier or more convenient.

Christ is not asking us to neglect genuine responsibilities or stop loving our families. He is revealing that nothing can come before our response to Him. The disciple who keeps looking backward cannot guide the plow in a straight line. We cannot fully follow Jesus while continually longing for the life He has asked us to leave behind.

Saint Jerome devoted his life to Scripture and famously taught that ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ. Yet knowing Christ involves more than reading His words. We must allow those words to direct our choices. Scripture is not merely something to admire—it is the living voice of God calling us forward.

Today, Jesus may be asking us to release a regret, surrender a fear, abandon an excuse, or take the next faithful step. We may not understand everything, as Job did not. We only need to trust the One who calls us.

Jesus, where am I saying, “I will follow You, but first…”?

What am I still looking back toward that prevents me from following You freely?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You call me to follow You without fear and without placing conditions upon my surrender.

When I do not understand Your ways, give me the humility of Job to remain before You in prayer.

Free me from the regrets, attachments, and excuses that keep me looking backward. Through the intercession of Saint Jerome, give me a deeper love for Your Word and the courage to live what You teach.

Let me place my hand upon the plow, keep my eyes fixed upon You, and follow wherever You lead.
