Memorial of Saint Pius of Pietrelcina September 23, 2026

Readings: Proverbs 30:5–9 • Psalm 119 • Luke 9:1–6

The prayer in Proverbs is strikingly simple: Give me neither poverty nor riches, but only what I need. It is the prayer of someone who understands that both desperation and abundance can tempt the heart to forget God.

In the Gospel, Jesus asks the Twelve to live this prayer. He sends them to proclaim the Kingdom without provisions, money, or extra clothing. Their mission must depend upon God’s power rather than their possessions. They are to carry Christ, not secure themselves against every possible difficulty.

Jesus still sends us this way. We may feel unprepared, believe we lack the right words, or wait until our circumstances are more comfortable. But Christ does not ask us to possess everything before serving him. He asks us to trust that what he provides will be enough.

Padre Pio lived this radical dependence upon God. His strength did not come from an easy life, but from prayer, the Eucharist, confession, and a willingness to unite his suffering with Christ. His familiar counsel captures today’s message beautifully: pray, hope, and do not worry.

Today, Jesus may be asking us to release something we have been gripping too tightly—our plans, security, reputation, or fear of failure. When our hands are emptied, they become free to receive what God provides and carry his mercy to others.

For Prayer

Lord Jesus, show me what I am carrying that prevents me from trusting you completely. Give me the grace to depend upon your providence and the courage to go wherever you send me.

Jesus, you have given me what I need for this moment. I trust you to provide the rest.
