Tuesday of the Twenty-fifth Week in Ordinary Time — September 22, 2026

Sacred Silence

Place yourself before the Lord. Let your heart become quiet and receptive.

“Guide me, Lord, in the way of your commands.”

Reflection

Jesus is told that His mother and relatives are waiting outside. He responds:

“My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.”

Jesus is not distancing Himself from Mary. He is revealing the deepest reason for her closeness to Him. Mary did not merely give birth to Jesus; she heard God’s word, trusted it, and built her life upon it. Her “yes” became flesh through obedience.

Jesus extends that same relationship to us. Through Baptism, we belong to God’s household, but He invites us into an even deeper intimacy: to listen to His Word and allow it to shape our choices.

Proverbs warns that our own actions may seem right to us, while God alone sees and weighs the heart. We can convince ourselves that our motives are good, excuse our lack of compassion, or substitute religious appearances for genuine obedience. Yet God desires justice and mercy more than outward offerings.

The Word of God must travel from our ears to our hearts—and then into our lives. Prayer should change how we speak, forgive, serve, decide, and respond to those who need mercy.

Every act of obedience draws us closer to Jesus. Whenever we hear His Word and put it into practice, we are no longer standing outside. We enter more deeply into His family.

Call to Conversion

Consider one teaching of Jesus that you have heard many times but have struggled to practice—perhaps forgiving someone, showing patience, avoiding judgment, or helping a person in need.

Choose one concrete act of obedience today.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, open my ears to hear Your Word and soften my heart to receive it.

Protect me from believing that my own way is always the right way. Reveal the motives hidden within me and guide me in the way of Your commands.

Like Mary, may I welcome Your Word with faith, carry it within my heart, and bring it to life through obedience.

Draw me into the intimacy of Your family, so that my actions may reveal that I truly belong to You.
