Saturday of the Twenty-Fifth Week in Ordinary Time September 26, 2026

Today’s readings remind us that life is brief, our understanding is limited, and God alone is our lasting refuge.

Ecclesiastes urges us to enjoy the blessings of life while remembering the One who gave them. Youth, strength, success, possessions—even our present troubles—will eventually pass away. This is not meant to make us fearful or gloomy. It is an invitation to live wisely, gratefully, and purposefully before God.

The psalm gives us the prayer we need: “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart.” Wisdom begins when we recognize that our days are gifts rather than possessions. We cannot control how many we will receive, but we can decide how faithfully we will use today.

In the Gospel, the disciples are amazed by Jesus’ works, yet they cannot understand His warning that He will be handed over. They want the glory of His miracles, but they are not prepared for the mystery of the Cross. Their fear keeps them from asking Jesus what He means.

We sometimes respond in the same way. When God’s plan becomes confusing or painful, we may remain silent, withdraw, or pretend that we understand. But Jesus does not reject our questions. He invites us to bring our uncertainty to Him. Faith does not mean understanding everything; it means trusting the Lord enough to remain with Him when we do not understand.

The Cross teaches us that what appears to be defeat can become the place of God’s greatest victory. Because Christ entered suffering and conquered death, no moment entrusted to Him is meaningless.

For prayer today: What question, fear, or uncertainty have I been afraid to bring to Jesus?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, teach me to number my days with gratitude and to remember that You are my lasting refuge. When I do not understand Your ways, keep me close to You. Give me the courage to bring You my questions, the humility to wait for Your answer, and the faith to trust that even the Cross can become a path to new life. Prosper the work of my hands today and use my life for Your glory. Amen.
