Readings: 1 Corinthians 3:18–23; Psalm 24; Luke 5:1–11

The Word of God

Saint Paul reminds us that worldly wisdom can deceive us. Everything belongs to God, and we belong to Christ.

Psalm 24 asks who may stand in God’s holy place: the one with clean hands, a pure heart, and a life directed toward God rather than vanity.

In the Gospel, Jesus tells Simon Peter:

“Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.”

Simon explains that they have worked all night without success, but then says:

“At your command I will lower the nets.”

When the great catch comes, Simon recognizes his unworthiness: “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” Jesus does not reject him. Instead, He says:

“Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”

Reflection

Jesus often meets us in the ordinary places of life—in our work, responsibilities, disappointments, and fatigue. Simon had already worked hard. From his perspective, trying again may have seemed pointless. Yet he obeyed because Jesus asked him to.

The miracle began with trust.

There may be areas of our lives where lives where we feel tired from trying, praying, or beginning again. Jesus may be asking us to put out into deeper water—not because we are strong enough, but because He is faithful. His word can bring fruit where our own efforts have produced nothing.

Simon’s first response to the miracle was humility. He saw both the greatness of Jesus and his own sinfulness. But Jesus did not say, “You are disqualified.” He said, “Do not be afraid.” Christ’s mercy is greater than our weakness.

The Lord does not wait for us to become perfect before calling us. He calls us so that, through His grace, we may become holy and useful in His Kingdom.

Saint Gregory the Great teaches us to seek God’s wisdom rather than human recognition. True greatness is found in belonging completely to Christ and serving others with humility.

What may God be saying to me?

“My child, do not let discouragement convince you that your efforts are useless. Trust My word and begin again. I know your sins and weaknesses, but I have not rejected you. Do not be afraid. Place your life in My hands, and I will make it fruitful.”

Questions for Prayer Where am I discouraged or tempted to give up? What is Jesus asking me to place in the deep water of trust? Do I allow shame over my sins to keep me distant from Christ? Am I seeking God’s wisdom or human approval? How can I serve someone today with humility? Prayer

Jesus, I have worked hard in many areas of my life and sometimes feel discouraged when I see little fruit. Give me the faith to obey You and lower my nets again.

Purify my heart and forgive my sins. When I feel unworthy, remind me that Your mercy is greater than my weakness. Help me not to be afraid of following You more deeply.

Saint Gregory the Great, pray that I may seek God’s wisdom, serve with humility, and belong entirely to Christ.

Jesus, I trust in You. Amen.
